Day 2 Kildare Cross Country Championships, Carragh - 9th October, 2011
Results - Kildare Cross Country Day 1 - 25 Sep, 2011 Crookstown
There was a great turnout by Le Cheile at Day 1 of the Kildare Cross Country Championships held at Crookstown on 25th September, 2011. The conditions were poor but the rain did not deter almost 30 Le Cheile athletes from making the trip. The course was also a difficult test as it was quite hilly and this may have been a bit of a shock to the system for some of our younger athletes.
For many of our younger athletes it was their first Cross Country Race and despite the conditions all performed really well. Of particular note were Oran Hayes and Caoimhe Cronin who both achieved top 10 finishes in the boys and girls under 10 races.
There were top 15 finishes for Eaibhin Grimes and Carragh Hayes in the Girls Under 12, Emma Browne also ran well finishing in mid division.
In the boys Under 12 Alex Byrne and Conor Murnaghan ran very well again finishing mid division. Ciaran Connolly a strong contender in the boys Under 12 turned up at Crookstown but unfortunately could not run due to illness.
In the girls Under 14 Fina Hayes was the sole Le Cheile representative and did very well in what was a very strong field. Fina continues to improve, although she did not feature in the medals on this occasion.
In the boys Under 14, Conall Hayes, Thomas Connolly and Liam Murphy lined up in what was also a very strong field. Conall while leading the race and looking very strong was forced to withdraw due to injury. Liam went on to finish in a creditable 5th place with Thomas not far behind.
In the boys Under 16 Sean Flanagan ran an incredible race to finish 2nd. During the race Sean had fallen back to 4th place but dug deep and found enough to improve two places in the last third of the race. Darragh Nolan also ran a great race in tough conditions to finish a very creditable 5th.
Conor Murphy claimed the Gold medal in the Boys Under 18. Conor ran a smart race staying with his main rival for most of the race but keeping enough in the tank to sprint clear in the final 400. Well done Conor.
The Masters men proved to be the most exciting race of the day. Le Cheile athletes John O’Regan, Tony Brennan, Des Walsh, Ulf Pilarp and Pat Hayes made up a very strong Le Cheile team in a very large field. Le Cheile claimed gold with John O’ Regan finishing in 3rd Tony Brennan a close fourth followed by Ulf, Des and Pat.

Results from Leinster Championships Round 1 & 2
Day 2 saw a much brighter start for Le Chéile, and first up was Fina Hayes in the girls u13 600m, her debut track & field Leinster race, Fina was supported by her family (I just missed the race), Fina did the club pround and was the only female athlete representing the club. Next up was Liam Murphy and this too was his first T & F Leinster, Liam put in a strong performace and he qualifed for the final later in the day. Next up were Conall Hayes (son of Pat) Conall was running in the U14800m, Conall went into the race as Kildare Champion, Thomas Connolly and Patrick Flanagan, heats were the order for this race with first 4 from the two heat and 2 fastest qualifing for the final. Thomas ran well in his first t & f Leinster but didnlt make it to the final, hard luck Thomas, it was the same for Patrick who gave a brave attempt over the last 100m but didn't qualify for the Final. Conall ran a very tactical heat and qualified in 4th position, I will admitt that i was a bit worried when I saw the boys who were in 5/6th place sprint hard in the last 60m to make a move on Conall but it was in vain. It was a long wait before Sean ran his 800m, Sean put in a solid performance and saw off a number of challanges but in the last 200m the positions didn't change and Sean finished in a very respectable 3rd place, his race was a straight final. Conor Murphy ran in the 1500m U18, he tells me he was went rested from his efforts in his 800m, Conor and the other U18boys were all hedging their bets and none was perpared to make a move in a very slow first 2 laps, now i mean slow, first 400m was 82 secs, second was no faster, then a move was made Conor attempted to move on Noth Laois athletes but 2 others moved past his shoulder, in what came down to a 800m race in the end, Conor had to settle on 3rd place. So we were down to the sprint finals and then onto the 600m final and the last races of the day the 800m finals. Liam U13 stepped onto the line and gave it his best shot, it was a very fast 600m in which Liam did his best but was out of the medals on this occassion. Conall was up next and he had been told to focus on his own race and not try to prempt what anyone else may or may not do. The race started with a fast pace and Conell was well placed in 3/4 position in the first quater, he then made his move and went up a place coming into the final lap he took the lead and with an injection of pace he was clear of his fellow athletes, down the back straight with 200m to go Conall was out in front and was leading by about 8m, he never lost his lead and he finished in fine style in a terrific race and to the cheers of his fellow team mates and parents he took the title of Leinster Champion. What a race!! it was fantastic and what an achievement for Conall.
Conall, Sean and Conor will go forward to the All-Ireland Championsips which take place on 9th/10th and 23rd/24th July. Continued success to you all. Many thanks to coaches and parents without whose support the athletes could not train and compete to the best of their ability. "No one said it was easy".
Next competition is Round 3 of the League Sunday 26th June 2011, Venue Naas AC. U8 - U15 athletes, please confirm your attendance we are currently leading section "C".

24 Hour Run - June 18, 2011 - Superstar Starter
For the last decade, Mark has competed in the world's harshest environments - surviving sub-zero Antarctic temperatures as he raced to the South Pole, and Atlantic gales in the Round Ireland race, suffering scorching heat, running six marathons in the Gobi Desert in one week. He has run a marathon in the North Pole, raced through the desert lowlands of the Syrian African Rift Valley to the Dead Sea and completed a high-altitude marathon in the Himalayas, some of these with our very own John O'Regan. And he's done so in a world of total darkness. For the last decade, Mark Pollock has been blind!
Mark is on his biggest adventure yet, having broken his back in a very bad fall, he is now fighting his way to walking again!! He is truly inspirational and we are very lucky to have him involved in our fundraiser!!!!
Please come down at 10am on Saturday to give Mark a BIG Le Cheile welcome and to let him know that we are behind him all the way in the next step of his incredible journey!!!!

Murphy creates history for Scoil San Carlo
Congratulations to Le Cheile athlete Liam Murphy who finished 2nd in the Kildare Schools cross country championship on the 14th of April. Liam ran a brave race leading for the entire 1.5km race but unfortunately was passed in the final 20 metres by the more experienced and highly capable Luke Morris of Newbridge AC. Liam representing Scoil San Carlo has the honour of winning the first ever County Cross Country medal for his school.
This race followed a fine performance by Liam in the Great Ireland Run on the 10th of April where he finished 15th out of over 1000 athletes in the under 16 Juvenile event. Liam completed the 2.8km Great Ireland Race in a time of 11 minutes and 2 seconds.

Leinster IndoorChampionship 12/13 February
On Sunday, Pat Hayes headed down to Nenagh, Conall Hayes, Sean Flanagan and Conor Murphy were all in action. Conall was running in the U14 800, he had a heat and qualified for the final. Conall held his own in the final and again just finished outside the medals in 5th place, this too was Conall's first indoor race. Sean Flanagan was competing in the Long Jump and the 800m, Sean made it to the final of the Long Jump, job well done considering he couldn't even get a jump in at the club as its been so wet. Sean too had to run heats and he made it to the final, he finished in 6th place. Last up was Conor Murphy, competing in U18 800m, the u19 race was ran at the same time. Conor finished in 1st place and has taken his first indoor title, he is delighted with the result. Conor is off to Scotland on 4th March to compete for Kildare in the U20 800m, so we wish him well.
thanks to Willie Murphy and Pat Hayes, Well done to all the boys.

All Ireland 16th January 2011
Conall Hayes was competing in his second National championship of the Cross County season, he also was on the Kildare team and got off to a flying start and continue to take on the leaders well into the 3rd quater of the race, Conall ended up finishing in 97 place. Conor Murphy having finished 11th in the Leinsters was on the pronvicial team so the pressure was on. Conor had a good start but his hamstring was very tight after about 1000m so he did well to finish in 47th place overall. Conor needless to say was unhappy with his performance, but he will put this behind him and look ahead to the indoor season.
Conall on the other hand was happy that he took on the leaders and was in 2nd place for the first 1500m, so well done to him. Conall sister Carragh enjoyed her first All Ireland championship, i'm sure it willbe the first of many.
Thanks to Pat Hayes who was the Coach on the day.
